Digital x-rays are more advanced than traditional film-based methods. With digital x-rays, the results are available immediately after the exam. Many children and even adults could have tooth misalignment problems when growing up. Our dentists are experienced in fitting all types of braces, including ceramic or traditional metal braces. We also offer invisible braces, known as Invisalign. In small children, metal or ceramic braces are the common option. However, in teens and adults, Invisalign can be used. With the Invisalign trays, it will be hard for others to know that you are wearing braces. The Invisalign trays are removable, allowing you to enjoy your favorite foods and drinks and engage in your favorite sports during treatment. In addition, Invisalign requires far fewer dental appointments since its treatment period is much shorter. We will advise you on the pros and cons of different types of braces to help you make an informed decision.

We cannot overstate the social, emotional, and professional benefits of smiling confidently. However, if you must hold back a smile or even cover your mouth whenever you smile because you do not want people to see your teeth, you should consider visiting a cosmetic dentist. Cosmetic dentistry is a proven art of smile enhancement. Many cosmetic dental procedures can improve the appearance of your smile, irrespective of your age. You can barely exhaust the wide range of amazing possibilities, from incredible porcelain veneers to professional teeth whitening.
The first step towards your smile makeover is to book an appointment with the dentists at South Coast Dentistry in Aliso Viejo. During the initial appointment, our doctors will conduct a thorough dental examination to ensure that your cosmetic dental issues are not a sign of an underlying dental problem. After establishing your health, we can cosmetically enhance your smile in many ways.
To get the most out of our cosmetic dental procedures, you should inform the dentist exactly what you do not like about your smile and how you would like to improve it. For example, what do you like or dislike about the size, shape, color, and spacing of your teeth? Are your teeth well-aligned and bright? Would you like to show more or less gums when you smile?
Our dentists will recommend the ideal cosmetic dental procedure depending on your needs. Some common cosmetic dental procedures offered at South Coast Dentistry are cosmetic bonding, veneers, composite fillings, Invisalign, Inlays and Onlays, dental crowns, and removable dentures.
Our pediatric dentists work with children from infancy through adolescence. Our pediatric dentist had undergone child psychology training, allowing him to connect with children effectively. We provide all the necessary examinations and treatments to enhance children's dental health. A child's oral health is crucial to their overall well-being. Our routine dental checkups for children usually include professional teeth cleaning to prevent the accumulation of plaque and tartar on the teeth. This ensures that a child's teeth develop the way they should. In addition, regular dental checkups allow us to identify and address dental issues in children before they progress.
Dental cavities are the most common dental issues in children. If a decaying tooth is left untreated, it could cause illness and discomfort. Filling the dental cavities restores the normal function of the teeth. We understand that the process of placing dental fillings is not always comfortable. Our pediatric dentist will ensure the entire process is comfortable for the child.
We believe that when it comes to dental health, prevention is always better than waiting for dental issues to develop. By applying dental sealants to a child's teeth, we prevent cavities from occurring. In addition, dental sealants are quick and easy to apply. Placing dental sealants involves applying a thin coating on the chewing surface of a child's teeth. Applying dental sealants only takes a few minutes and does not involve drilling or numbing.
South Coast Dentistry provides professional teeth whitening services to keep your smile bright and attractive. If you have never had your teeth whitened, we invite you to book an appointment with us. You will be surprised to discover that your teeth can become eight shades brighter in just one bleaching visit. Many patients ask questions regarding teeth whitening, especially those considering over-the-counter teeth whitening procedures. We always advise patients to seek professional teeth whitening because it is more effective than at-home teeth whitening procedures.
The ultimate goal of teeth whitening is to have a gorgeous smile. With this in mind, teeth whitening should involve using a powerful and proven whitening solution to do the trick. The teeth whitening methods used by professional dentists are more effective than the whitening products in stores. Our teeth whitening techniques at South Coast Dentistry penetrate beneath the surface of the enamel to remove deep stains. Most of the whitening products you buy in stores will only remove surface stains, meaning you will not achieve a bright smile.
We offer zoom teeth whitening, the most trusted teeth whitening procedure. Your teeth will appear much whiter after only one appointment. In addition, we make the whitening process easier for our patients by sedating them to ensure they do not feel any pain or discomfort during the whitening.
Metal braces have been a popular and effective orthodontic treatment for many years. While alternative options like ceramic braces, lingual braces, and clear aligners have gained popularity in recent years, traditional metal braces continue to be a reliable and widely-used treatment choice. In this article, we will explore the components, functionality, treatment process, maintenance, and appearance considerations associated with metal braces.
If you are considering metal braces in Aliso Viejo, we invite you to contact us at South Coast Dentistry. We will assess your teeth, bite, and jaw alignment to determine if this is the suitable option for you. We can also advise you on alternative options that suit you. We understand that there are many types of metal brace brackets and components on the market today, so be assured we use the best and most-effective option for you.
Metal braces consist of several components that work together to move teeth into their desired positions. The main components are metal brackets, archwires, and ligatures or modules.
Metal brackets are small, square-shaped pieces that are attached to the front surface of each tooth using dental adhesive. These brackets act as anchors for the rest of the braces system. They are typically made of stainless steel, but other materials like titanium may also be used.
The archwire is a thin, flexible wire that connects the brackets and provides the necessary force to move the teeth. It runs through the brackets and follows the curve of your dental arch. The archwire applies gentle pressure on the teeth, gradually guiding them into their desired positions. The wire is usually made of stainless steel, but in some cases, nickel-titanium wires may be used due to their shape memory properties.
Ligatures, also known as "ties" or "O-rings," are small elastic or metal bands that secure the archwire to the brackets. They hold the wire in place, ensuring it exerts consistent pressure on the teeth. They can be changed during adjustment appointments to allow for wire tightening or replacement. Elastic ligatures come in various colors, giving patients the option to personalize their braces with their favorite color or change it during each visit.
Bands — In some cases, metal bands may be used to encircle certain teeth. Bands are custom-fitted metal rings that go around the molars and serve as anchors for the archwire. They provide stability and additional support for tooth movement.
Buccal Tubes — Buccal tubes, also known as molar tubes, are metal attachments welded or bonded to the bands or brackets. They are located on the back teeth (molars) and serve as anchor points for the archwire. The buccal tubes help control the movement of the back teeth during treatment.
Hooks or Attachments — Hooks or attachments may be present on the brackets or bands. These small metal extensions are used to hold elastics or other auxiliary components that aid in specific tooth movements, such as correcting bite issues or closing gaps between teeth.
Springs — Springs may be incorporated into the braces system to apply additional force for specific tooth movements. They can be used to close spaces between teeth or correct certain bite problems. Springs come in different types, including coil springs and power chains.
The first step in getting metal braces is to schedule an initial consultation with an orthodontist. During this appointment, the orthodontist will examine your teeth, jaws, and bite to determine if metal braces are the appropriate treatment for you. They may take X-rays, photographs, and impressions of your teeth for a comprehensive evaluation.
Based on the examination, the orthodontist will develop a personalized treatment plan tailored to your specific dental needs. They will discuss the recommended course of treatment, estimated duration, and the expected outcome with you. You'll have the opportunity to ask questions and address any concerns you may have. Consider asking these questions:
Remember, the consultation stage is an opportunity for you to gather as much information as possible and address any concerns or doubts you may have. Don't hesitate to ask any questions that can help you make an informed decision about your orthodontic treatment.
Once you decide to proceed with metal braces, the next step is to have them placed on your teeth. The process typically involves the following steps:
After the braces are placed, you'll need to visit your orthodontist regularly for adjustment appointments. These appointments usually occur every 4-6 weeks but can vary depending on your treatment plan. During these visits, the orthodontist will make adjustments to the archwire to gradually apply pressure and guide your teeth into their desired positions. They may also replace ligatures or modules as needed.
Once your teeth have been aligned, the active phase of wearing braces will end. However, to maintain the results, you'll enter the retention phase. During this phase, you'll typically be given a retainer to wear. The retainer can either be removable or fixed, depending on your orthodontist's recommendation. The retainer helps prevent your teeth from shifting back to their original positions.
Maintaining good oral hygiene is crucial when wearing metal braces. You should brush your teeth thoroughly after every meal and floss daily to remove food particles and plaque that can accumulate around the brackets and wires. Orthodontic brushes and floss threaders can help you reach difficult areas.
Additionally, certain dietary considerations should be followed to prevent damage to the braces. Avoid sticky, hard, or chewy foods as they can dislodge or break the brackets or wires. If you experience discomfort from the braces or notice any issues like loose brackets or wires, contact your orthodontist for guidance and assistance.
Despite the ever-evolving technology and orthodontic care options, traditional metal braces are still widely used. Here is an overview of why these braces are still a great option.
Metal braces are highly effective in treating various dental issues such as severe misalignment and complex cases. This is an advantage over clear aligners like Invisalign, which are more suitable for mild to moderate cases of misalignment.
Metal braces are made from durable stainless steel, ensuring that they can withstand the forces of orthodontic treatment without easily breaking or becoming damaged. This is an advantage over ceramic braces and other braces, which are more prone to chipping or fracturing due to their more delicate material.
Metal braces provide orthodontists with a high level of control over tooth movements. The brackets and archwires can be adjusted and customized as needed, allowing for precise and accurate tooth positioning. This level of control is often more comprehensive than what can be achieved with clear aligners, which have certain limitations in terms of tooth movements.
Metal braces are generally more cost-effective compared to alternatives like ceramic braces or clear aligners. They offer an affordable orthodontic option for individuals who may have budget constraints.
Metal braces are particularly effective in treating complex cases of misalignment, overcrowding, and bite problems. They provide the strength and control necessary to address severe dental issues. Clear aligners and other types of braces are more suitable for mild to moderate cases and may not be as effective in complex situations.
Metal braces have a long-standing history of successful orthodontic treatment. They have undergone extensive testing and development, making them a reliable and trusted option for achieving optimal results. This is an advantage over newer alternatives like clear aligners, which are still evolving in terms of their effectiveness and long-term stability.
The appearance of braces is a significant consideration for many of us when seeking orthodontic treatment. Here is what to consider when choosing metal braces:
Remember, metal braces are a temporary means to a long-lasting and beautiful smile. While they may require some adjustment and self-confidence during the treatment period, the end result will make it all worthwhile. Focus on the positive aspects of your orthodontic journey, and soon enough, you'll be proudly showing off your straight and healthy smile to the world.
Apart from appearance concerns, here are other disadvantages of metal braces that you should consider:
Here is an overview of the alternative orthodontics treatment options.
Lingual braces — Unlike traditional metal braces, lingual braces are placed on the inner surfaces of the teeth. This positioning makes them virtually invisible from the outside, offering a highly discreet orthodontic option. Lingual braces are custom-made to fit the individual's teeth and can effectively address various dental issues.
Ceramic braces — Ceramic braces have a similar structure and functionality as metal braces. However, instead of metal brackets, ceramic braces use tooth-colored or clear brackets that blend in with the natural color of your teeth. Hence, they are popular for people who want a more discreet appearance but still require the effectiveness of traditional braces.
Clear aligners (e.g., Invisalign) — Clear aligners are a popular alternative to traditional braces, particularly for individuals seeking a highly discreet and removable orthodontic treatment. Clear aligners are custom-made, transparent trays that gradually shift the teeth into proper alignment. They are removable, allowing for easier oral hygiene maintenance and the freedom to eat and drink without dietary restrictions. Clear aligners are generally recommended for mild to moderate cases of misalignment or spacing issues.
Self-ligating braces — These braces are similar to traditional metal braces, but they don’t use ligatures to hold the archwire in place. Instead, the brackets have built-in clips or doors that secure the wire. With these braces, there is smoother and more comfortable tooth movement, reduced treatment time, and fewer adjustment appointments.
The suitability of alternative treatment options depends on factors like the severity of your dental issues, your lifestyle, and your preferences.
While they may be more noticeable compared to alternative options, metal braces' advantages make them a popular choice for many people. Metal braces offer excellent treatment control, durability, and cost-effectiveness. They can effectively address complex cases and provide reliable results.

Dentures, which are removable dental appliances, replace missing teeth and surrounding tissues while enhancing aesthetics, restoring oral function, and supporting facial structures. Every patient possesses distinct dental needs, prompting the necessity for specialty dentures that address their concerns.
These specialized dentures are crafted to cater to unique oral conditions or specific requirements. This thus ensures an ideal blend of comfort, functionality, and aesthetic appeal, all tailored to meet the patient's precise needs.
It is necessary to consult a specialist in Aliso Viejo who will recommend whether dentures are the perfect fit for your dental needs. At South Coast Dentistry, dental healthcare is vital for your overall health. Therefore, you can rely on us to address all your dental concerns.
When traditional braces cannot adequately address a patient's oral conditions or needs, a dentist could suggest specialty dentures. These recommendations come from specific situations, namely:
Patients who have lost all or a significant number of their teeth often turn to traditional dentures, also known as conventional dentures. These removable dental appliances provide a time-tested and widely used solution. Patients could be fitted with either of the two traditional dentures:
Dentists recommend complete dentures when all natural teeth are missing in the upper or lower arch. These dentures comprise a flesh-colored acrylic base atop the gums, supporting a complete set of artificial teeth. The base is crafted to fit the unique contours of the individual's mouth, while the artificial teeth are chosen to create a natural-looking smile. Complete dentures rely on suction or adhesives to maintain their position and stability.
Partial dentures offer a suitable solution when some natural teeth remain. They consist of a framework made from either metal or acrylic that attaches to the existing natural teeth. Artificial teeth are then utilized to fill in the gaps created by missing teeth.
To ensure stability, partial dentures could incorporate clasps or other connectors that secure them to the remaining teeth. The base and artificial teeth are custom-designed to harmonize seamlessly with the patient's natural teeth and gums.
While traditional dentures provide an effective method for tooth replacement, advancements in dental technology have introduced alternative options, namely specialty dentures. These alternatives offer enhanced stability, functionality, and a more natural feel than traditional dentures.
Specialty dentures are customized solutions. Therefore, there are various types of dentures. Here is a look at some of them:
An implant-supported denture serves as a replacement for multiple teeth, similar to a traditional denture. However, what sets it apart is its direct attachment to the jawbone using dental implants, which function as artificial tooth roots.
By firmly anchoring themselves to the jawbone, these dentures offer heightened stability for essential activities like chewing, eating, and speaking. Typically, individuals who have experienced significant tooth loss, including those missing most or all of their teeth, are prime candidates for implant-supported dentures. Furthermore, those with sporadic tooth loss in multiple areas can benefit from implant-supported partial dentures.
Determining eligibility for implant-supported dentures hinges on adequate jawbone structure to support dental implants. In cases where bone volume is insufficient, dental bone grafts can rectify the issue by enhancing volume and density.
Overdentures, which can be placed over natural teeth or dental implants, are dental prostheses that offer support, stability, and improved functionality. They are a viable solution for individuals who have lost several teeth or are at risk of losing their remaining natural teeth. Sometimes, overdentures can be an excellent alternative to other dental interventions like veneers, crowns, or implants.
When dental implants anchor overdentures, they stimulate the jawbone, thus preventing bone loss. This stimulation helps maintain the natural bone structure and contributes to the preservation of facial aesthetics.
The customization of overdentures is a crucial aspect. They are tailor-made to fit the patient's mouth, ensuring optimal comfort. By distributing the pressure evenly across the gums and anchor points, overdentures minimize the likelihood of discomfort or the development of sore spots. Moreover, they are crafted to deliver a natural-looking smile. The prosthetic teeth are carefully selected and positioned to harmonize with the patient's facial features and restore a naturally appealing appearance.
Immediate load dentures, also known as "teeth-in-a-day," provide patients with the convenience of receiving dentures on the same day as their dental implant surgery. Unlike traditional implant procedures that require a healing period before receiving dentures, immediate-load dentures offer immediate functionality. This allows patients to leave the dental office with temporary teeth.
During the healing process, the dental implants gradually integrate with the jawbone, a process called osseointegration. This integration ensures a stable and durable foundation for the final dentures. Once the implants have fully integrated, the temporary dentures are replaced with permanent dentures. These dentures are custom-made to fit the patient's mouth and meet their fit, function, and aesthetic needs.
However, not all patients are suitable candidates for immediate-load dentures. Factors including the quality and quantity of the jawbone, overall oral health, and the treatment plan determined by the dentist or prosthodontist influence the decision to proceed with this option.
Examples of immediate-load dentures include:
Precision dentures are a type of dental prosthesis that combines the stability of dental implants with the convenience of removable dentures. These dentures utilize precision attachments. The attachments are mechanical devices that connect the denture to dental implants or remaining natural teeth, providing enhanced retention and stability.
The precision attachments used in these dentures are made up of two components:
The male attachment is typically attached to the dental implant or natural tooth, while the female attachment is embedded within the denture. When the denture is inserted into the mouth, the male and female attachments interlock, creating a secure and stable connection.
One of the main advantages of precision dentures is their ability to provide a more natural and seamless appearance. The attachments are discreetly placed, minimizing the visibility of metal clasps or hooks often used in traditional removable dentures.
Precision dentures offer several benefits, including improved stability during speaking and eating, reduced gum irritation, and increased chewing efficiency. These dentures can be easily removed for cleaning and maintenance, allowing for proper oral hygiene practices.
The success and suitability of precision dentures depend on various factors, including the number and position of the remaining natural teeth, the jawbone's condition, and the patient's overall oral health.
In a specialty denture consultation, the dentist or prosthodontist follows several steps to evaluate the patient's needs and determine the most appropriate treatment plan. The following is a general overview of what could occur during a specialty denture consultation:
The specialty denture consultation aims to provide patients with a comprehensive understanding of their options, enabling them to make informed decisions about their treatment. It also allows the dentist or prosthodontist to gather the necessary information to create personalized specialty dentures that meet the patient's unique oral conditions and requirements.
Customized dentures offer significant benefits. It is why they are the preferred option for many looking for dental solutions. Here is a look at some of the reasons why you should consider specialty dentures:
Specialty dentures go beyond the standard options by tailoring a personalized solution for every patient, considering their unique oral conditions, preferences, and goals. This individualized approach increases comfort, functionality, and aesthetics, surpassing regular dentures.
The customization process ensures an accurate fit, minimizing discomfort and irritation commonly associated with ill-fitting dentures. Moreover, these specialized dentures are crafted to optimize the patient's ability to bite, chew, and speak easily and efficiently.
By incorporating aesthetic customization, specialty dentures create a natural and visually pleasing appearance that can significantly enhance the patient's self-confidence and overall satisfaction. The ultimate objective of specialty dentures is to deliver a bespoke, tailored solution that precisely addresses each patient's needs and desires.
The customization process considers the individual's unique oral conditions and needs, resulting in dentures designed to optimize biting, chewing, and speaking abilities. The enhanced functionality of specialty dentures is achieved through several factors.
The dentures are precisely fitted to the patient's mouth, ensuring a secure and stable fit. This reduces movement and slippage, allowing for better control and confidence while eating and speaking.
Specialty dentures are crafted using high-quality materials and advanced techniques. This results in dentures that are durable and resistant to wear and tear. The improved durability enhances the dentures' longevity, allowing patients to rely on them for an extended period without compromising functionality.
The customization process considers the patient's specific oral anatomy and bites alignment. This ensures that the dentures provide optimal occlusion and bite distribution, facilitating proper chewing and reducing the strain on the jaw joints and muscles.
The enhanced functionality of specialty dentures enables patients to enjoy a more natural and comfortable experience when performing daily oral functions.
Specialty dentures are crucial in promoting improved oral health by preserving the integrity of the underlying oral structures. Here are some specific ways in which they contribute to oral health:
Specialty dentures are designed to maintain the proper alignment of the bite, ensuring that the upper and lower teeth come together correctly. This helps prevent uneven tooth wear, jaw misalignment, and TMJ disorders. Thus, specialty dentures promote a harmonious bite and a healthier and more functional bite.
By maintaining the proper alignment of the jawbone and facial muscles, specialty dentures provide support for the facial structures. This helps prevent the sagging and sunken appearance noticeable with tooth loss. By preserving facial volume, specialty dentures contribute to a more youthful and natural facial appearance.
In cases where specialty dentures are used with natural teeth, they provide support and stability for the remaining teeth. By preventing excessive stress or shifting of the teeth, these dentures help preserve their alignment and reduce the risk of further tooth loss. This contributes to the overall health and longevity of the remaining natural teeth.
These dentures help prevent further bone loss by providing support and stimulation to the jawbone. The dentures distribute the biting forces evenly, stimulating the bone and preventing it from resorbing. This helps maintain the density and volume of the jawbone, preserving its strength and structural integrity.
With their customized design and precise fit, specialty dentures enhance speech clarity and chewing efficiency. Patients can speak more confidently and enjoy a broader range of food options, contributing to their overall well-being and quality of life.
The numerous benefits of specialty dentures contribute to improved oral health and overall well-being. These customized dentures preserve the jawbone's integrity, support facial structures, and maintain proper bite alignment. Specialty dentures enhance individuals' oral health by providing stability, comfort, and functionality.
Considering specialty dentures is highly recommended if you are experiencing tooth loss or are dissatisfied with your current dentures in Aliso Viejo. These dentures are tailored to your unique needs, offering a personalized solution.

That's why we decided to bring our two daughters here as well. Two thumbs up!!!

Look no further for your new dentist! Dr. Maleki is absolutely amazing! He is an expert at what he does. His staff is very attentive and welcoming. Finding a new dentist is always tough but their office made the transition very easy. I look forward to seeing Ana and Maryam ( the hygienists) every 6 months :)

Doctor M is the absolute best! my kids love going and the front desk staff is fantastic!
South Coast Dentistry has restored peace to my mouth. Last summer I went in for the first time under emergency circumstances and they found a way to get me in as quickly as possible. They fixed the issue quickly and I finally had no pain or inflammation after a year of suffering.
Since then they created a treatment plan that is not just corrective, it's preventative, which is awesome. I recently had a wisdom tooth extracted and I was terrified because of my prior experience, but everything went smooth and I had no post op issues.
The staff is amazing, and the office has a good energy that takes away my normal dentist office fear. I highly recommend them.

Doctor Maleki and staff are super welcoming, friendly and caring. They have been taking care of our family of 7 for almost a decade. The office is exceptionally clean and cool. There is no office wait to get seen and there is no trouble getting an appointment within a week or two. They do a detailed job cleaning and have gentle touches. My kids love them!

Lovely staff and awesome doctors. Everyone who works there is super duper nice. I know from personal experience that visit to a dentist can be overwhelming for some (my mom) but going to this place feels like fun. I love conversing with everyone there. They have great professionals who are just as good at the job as they are a good people. Dr Maleki is awesome with kids and he is the doctor for our daughter. Dr Saakshi is my dentist. She treats him like he is her friend! Shima and Christal are the nicest people you will ever meet and They are always great with appointments and follow ups and very clear on the costs. I am lucky that I found this place. Highly highly recommend to everyone.

Dr. Maleki and team are amazing!! They are very kind and helpful. I just had a root canal done by Dr Tandon, she was very good. She didn't hurt me at all and was constantly asking me if I was ok or if I was comfortable, she even gave me a pillow for my neck. Dr. Tandon's dental assistant is super nice she was on point she knew what Dr.Tandon needed before she had to ask. It made this procedure go much faster. The office staff is very nice and we're able to keep me in the loop with all my dental insurance and financial needs. I would highly recommend going to South Coast Dentistry !!!

Dr Maleki is the best. His staff is kind, friendly, and accommodating. Shima convinced me to get Invisalign to help with flossing and improving dental health and now that I've completed that process, my teeth look fantastic! I get compliments all the time about how I am glowing and how beautiful my smile is. Thank you South coast dentistry :) you're the best.
